Summary:
Problem Gambling Awareness Month recognized annually in March is dedicated to increasing public awareness of problem gambling and the availability of prevention, treatment, and recovery services. Gambling Disorder Screening Day is held on the second Tuesday in March to encourage healthcare providers to screen clients for problematic gambling. Many cases of Gambling Disorder go undetected due to inadequate screening. Gambling Disorder Screening Day addresses the critical importance to detect gambling related problems as early as possible and reduce harms. Gambling harms may include bankruptcy, divorce, loss of friendships, and unemployment. The Center hopes that healthcare providers are inspired to implement an evidence-based gambling screening tool into their regular practice.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the importance of utilizing evidence-based gambling screening tools and going beyond the closed ended question, “do you gamble?”
- Identify barriers to including an evidence-based gambling screening tool and ways to break them by including gambling as a part of therapeutic conversations and psychoeducation.
- Use the gold standard for formal diagnosis; the DSM-5 recognizes Gambling Disorder as a Substance-Related and Addictive Disorder
- Review tips for brief interventions to reduce harm and resources for recovery.
